In psychology, a flow state is one of being mentally immersed and focused, fully involved, and enjoying the process and activity. The word “flow” has a positive connotation, a suggestion of ease or abundance. Another common term “go with the flow” calls for being relaxed and accepting situations as they arise! This is what we hope to achieve when we discuss having focus and flow at work.
Applying the concept of “flow” to work depends on what kind of work you’re doing and where you’re doing it. The types of work and workplaces are versatile and complex. Fortunately, there are all sorts of sounds made to help you focus and flow, no matter what task you’re handling!
Check out these Spotify playlists to get you into the work groove and flow state:
A number of academic studies suggest that listening to classical music benefits the brain, sleep patterns, the immune system, and stress levels. Classical music enhances the activity of genes involved in dopamine secretion and transport, synaptic neurotransmission, and learning and memory. This does wonders to improve your brain function.
For those less enthused by Mozart or Beethoven, jazz is another great option for focusing your mind. Jazz music is also said to give musicians and listeners courage, by teaching us to improvise, innovate, and give others an equal voice.
White noise uses a wide range of frequencies, including high, low and mid-range sounds. These sounds often mimic soft running water, like a light rainstorm, or a distant waterfall. These are great for getting into your flow state, or keeping it going!
Brown noise lowers the frequencies even further than white noise, or pink noise. It uses strong, but low noises that resemble storms or waves.
Almost every individual who is part of the workforce may struggle to focus at some point in their job, and not understand why. What’s often missing is a simple focus aid, like a particular sound that you enjoy. We hope one of the playlists above helps you focus and flow at work!
